Like most games that come out, I was a couple months late to the hype on PEAK. I found it to be a pretty fun game though, and the trial-and-error aspects alongside selective omission of information by my more skilled friends was quite entertaining. After sinking enough hours into it, I decided I wanted to buff up on some of the intricacies of the game. So, I fired up my favorite Bing wrapper and put in a simple search:

This website is… a Carrd with advertisements. It is not a wiki! Nobody but the author can edit this. Wikis are collaborative projects. I guess this is excusable though, if you just assume the author is conflating “wiki” with “source of information”. Whatever, I’ll let it slide. What else is there?

If you’re chronically online (which you probably are if you’re reading this) the signs that these websites were generated by an LLM may be obvious to you. If you’re not, you’ll still notice things start falling apart after a few clicks. Links not working, contradictions in content, stuff like that. If you’ve played PEAK before, something more obvious will stick out at you—it’s all bullshit! None of this is real. “Insulated Sleeping Bag”? “High Altitude Expedition Tent”? Those aren’t items in PEAK! What the hell are you talking about?? I can’t edit these pages like wikis to correct the nonsense either.

I’ll nickname these purported wikis “slop wikis”. They have uncomfortable AI-generated web design, frequent misinformation, and they’re not even editable by other people! It’s driving me absolutely crazy. What is going on here?
For once in my life, a game I was on time for was Hytale. It makes sense though, since I have been waiting for the game since I was 11 years old! Haha, fuck. Time really flies.

Oh hell yes!! This rocks. Since the game came out only a few days ago it’s naturally underdeveloped with plenty of red links, but THIS is what wikis are about. Looking in the corner, I can see it’s hosted by Weird Gloop, the same people that host the Minecraft Wiki. This wiki will go places, and I can’t wait to use it as a reference for years to come.
Further down, you’ll get the lower quality stuff. In contrast to PEAK, there’s a couple general-purpose game news sites getting ranked here.

It makes sense that there’s a lot of competition for mod sites right now, but it’s disheartening that almost all of them are scaffolded with AI like this. It seems like some of them just link back to CurseForge for some of their downloads. I dunno, I guess I just don’t get it. I miss the old-fashioned slop, can we go back to that? This all feels bland in a way it never felt bland before, like it’s trying to pass itself off as not bland when it really is. This seems to be happening for a bunch of other games too—try searching on DuckDuckGo (er, Bing) the name of a recently released game you’ve played that might need a wiki. How much slop do you find below the first result?

After you’ve done that, go to Google and type the same thing in: the results are completely gone! Instead, most of the top results will be specific pages from human-written wikis. I started writing this blog post to talk about how I was seeing all these trash websites, and that still is interesting to me. However, I’m really confused now—what is Google doing right that Bing isn’t?
